The skin is comprised of two layers that cover a third fatty layer. These three layers differ in function, thickness and strength. The outer layer is called the epidermis, a tough protective layer that contains the melanin-producing melanocytes.

The second layer (located under the epidermis) is called dermis that contains nerve endings, sweat glands, oil glands and hair follicles. Under these two skin layers is a fatty layer of subcutaneous tissue, known as the subcutis or hypodermis.

Sleep plays a vital role for having a beautiful, healthy skin because it turns out there’s quite a bit of research and science behind the concept of beauty rest. Sleep is when some of the most important internal — and epidermal — recovery takes place!

Skin makes new collagen when you sleep, which prevents sagging. “That's part of the repair process,” says Patricia Wexler, MD, a dermatologist in New York. More collagen means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle. Only getting 5 hours a night can lead to twice as many fine lines as sleeping 7 hours would.

When we’re lack of sleep, it also affects our emotional well-being and in reciprocal, our emotional well-being also affects how healthy our skin is. Along with using EO’s other elements like relaxation or caring one’s self, beauty rituals, healthy diet and nutrition will contribute to the health of our skin.

Using the proper carrier oils plays also an important function in maintaining the natural moisture and flexibility of our skin.

Essential oils may calm irritated skin, reduce signs of aging, improve acne, protect your skin from sun damage and thicken your hair. A review published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that “at least 90 essential oils can be identified as being recommended for dermatological use, with at least 1,500 combinations.” What gives these oils their skin benefits is their ability to fight against pathogens that are responsible for dermatological infections.

Oils can also help improve inflammatory skin conditions — like dermatitis, eczema and lupus — improve the general appearance of your skin and even aid wound healing.
